South Dakota Pheasant Hunting

South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Traditions Start Here

Monday, January 16th, 2017

It has been a chilly winter for hunting upland game birds at High Plains Game Ranch but we have gotten it done with some great hunters and friends.

We still have a few weeks of the hunting season left so please call us if interested or if you would like to book your fall 2017 dates. 605-257-2365.

Like all of you we aren’t sure how fall is already here and summer is gone, but we are welcoming it and the fall pheasant hunting season!

We have had drought like conditions on the ranch this summer and our drylands corn shows it a little but we still have habitat for the birds. Even with the extra dry summer we have witnessed several pheasant hatches, which is always fun to see!

Rhonda and I have been fielding calls for fall hunts, however there are still lots of open dates for a hunt with us. Please call us at 605-257-2365 to book a hunt. We are a working ranch so please leave a message if we are not there and we will return your call.

This marks our 30th year of hunting pheasants on the high plains of South Dakota. It’s been a great adventure full of birds, dogs and wonderful people.

Thank you for making High Plains Game Ranch part of your hunting traditions,

We are in the final weeks of our 2015-2016 pheasant hunting season. What a wonderful season it has been. We have enjoyed quality weather – very few cancellations due to snow – and lots of great and responsible hunters graced our doorstep this year.

Rhonda and I thank you for allowing us to be part of your hunting traditions.

We enjoyed a wonderful 2014-2015 hunting season with longtime and new clients alike. Rhonda and I thank you deeply for letting us be part of your South Dakota pheasant hunting traditions. Many of you have become great friends to us. And many of you have returned year after year. We have witnessed your kids grow up while hunting our fields and that is something very special. Others of you have entrusted your own business’ clients and employees with us. Who says all business is done on a golf course? We thank you for the privilege to be part of your business.

We are looking forward to the start of the fall 2015 season. It will be here soon!

The rains have been so abundant this spring that we are just now thinking about irrigating our bird habitat. Usually I am irrigating by the first of July. The fields should be in prime condition come this fall. Be ready to hunt!

Please consider booking your hunt dates soon so we can accommodate you. Call 605-257-2365. Keep in mind we are a working farm/ranch operation and may not be around the phone so please leave a message with name, phone number and dates you are looking to hunt.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks  has completed the annual pheasant brood survey and the results show a 76 percent increase in the statewide pheasants-per-mile index from 2013.

“The results of this survey are highly anticipated by many who have a strong interest in South Dakota’s hunting heritage. The availability of pheasants and pheasant hunting opportunities in our state this fall should serve to enhance that heritage,” said Jeff Vonk, GFP Secretary.

Sept. 1 is right around the corner and that means South Dakota pheasant hunting at Vallery’s High Plains Game Ranch is too. We have a new puppy addition to the kennel lineup this fall with a beautiful yellow lab named Ivy. She is a sweetie and you will enjoy meeting her.

The rains have arrived at needed times this spring and summer and we are looking at a good year of pheasant habitat and food for our birds. It should be a great year.

As always we look forward to hosting your family or business at our own family ranch in western South Dakota. We are taking reservations now for the 2014-2015 season so please give us a call if you would like to book a hunt at (605) 257-2365. Please leave a message as we are busy haying and irrigating this time of year, but we will get back to you.

To those of you who have hunted with us for over 25 years now, we just simply want to say THANK YOU, and we look forward to seeing you this fall and winter.

We have been busy at the ranch getting fields planted for the coming hunting season (that will be here before we know it). We like to plant fields that have habitat and food for our wildlife that also provide great hunting opportunities for our hunters. Our go-to crops have been corn, milo and sorghum. Now we rely on the rain and some irrigation. Thankfully we have had rain this week.

Earlier this spring we lost are young lab Nova. Not sure what happened but we found her curled up and “asleep” in her kennel one day. A sad day for us as Nova was just beginning to find her niche. We do have a new addition coming in June and we are excited to see what this puppy will bring to High Plains Game Ranch.
