South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Traditions Start Here

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

You have got to love this weather! Jan. has been very mild and Feb is starting the same way. We had a hunt yesterday. Kolbi and “big nose” Kate had their game faces on.  It was a great time hunting behind a couple of veteran gun dogs. Rhonda and I made the Black Hills Stock show briefly. We picked up a couple of single trees and a pole for our bob sled that we have been restoring. The folks at Hansen Wheel & Wagon have been very helpful.  If you are interested in wagons, sleighs, and all the parts and peices that go with them. Look them up. Later…. Randy

Worked “keeper heifers” the last two days. Freeze brands and ear tags done! Some snow on the ground , a great time to be pheasant hunting in western South Dakota. This kind of weather is easy on the hunting dogs. Always fun. Working on our calving pens and barns, just “cuz”. We are still a ways off of due dates, but it is nice to be ready! We will sort  first calf heifers off of the main herd soon and have them close. We are still booking hunts. Later… Randy

Well, the weather is starting to feel like winter. It has been dry and warmer than normal. So this feels really cold tonight. ( 6 degrees ) Busy building fence, hardly any frost to go through. The hunting has been steady.  The habitat is holding up well.  The bobsled is coming along, it has been a nice “winter evenings”, type of project. More to do,but have alot of winter evenings left. Still booking hunts for Jan., Feb. and March. Later…… Randy

A wonderful January day! A slight wind and probably in the high 50’s or low 60’s, for a temp. We are hunting and working in long sleeve shirts. I have been busy rebuilding an old bob sled. I have had the runners for years. I have tighten up the “bobs” added new tounges and have the bed almost finished. A coat of paint and it will be just about done.  Then I will have to see if my old harness is usable. Still booking hunts.. Later Randy

We had a bunch of young guns out today! They were out for a good time. The birds were high flyers, a bright blue sky and a slight breeze made for a beautiful day for a pheasant hunt. A couple of inches of snow on the ground was a bonus. I have always liked to hunt in the snow.  The dogs were on their game today, it is so much better for them when it is a little cooler and scenting conditions are better. Later…. Randy

We had a nice Thanksgiving Day, weather was good, friends and family here. Today was the last day of regular deer season. We thinned out some does and took a few bucks, still alot of whitetail around.

We are still chasing pheasants. What a beautiful day today. We had a young lab hunting with us today. If everything stays on track he will be a fine pheasant dog. It is always fun to watch the young dogs turn on to their new profession. Later… Randy
