South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Traditions Start Here

Monday, February 28th, 2011

We had hunters in today, yes, we are still chasing pheasants. The weather is moderating, snow is settling. The deer are still yarded up. We saw a few geese today. We had not seen any for quite a while.

We are going to our local sport show on March 11,12 and 13th. It is in the Civic Center in Rapid City,SD. It should be a fun time, as we will see a lot of our local hunters.  If you want more info you can go to: and check it out. We hope to see you there! Later, Randy

We had a great hunt today. Our dog Kolbi was on top of her game today! It was cold with +/- 6 inches of fresh snow. We had sunshine while we were hunting.  The senting conditions were great and Kolbi made some retrieves and finds we will talk about for a long time. We had 4 days in the 50-60′ last week.  The river finally busted loose and we had ice jams with water rising and backing ice flowes into the timber along the river. Some chunks of ice are stacked on top of each other, maybe as much as 6 feet thick in places.

We sorted off our first calf heifers and brought them in. We could start calving soon. March 4,due dates. Hoping for warmer weather. Later Randy

I am ready for Spring!!!   I think all the animals would be tired of all this ice. I know I am. We are seeing some melt today. I just hope this is mostly gone when we start calving at the end of the month. It has been a long time since I had to sharp shoe a horse for calving. Well, all for now. …Randy

Well, we finially had to cover the tomatoes last night!!! Do not know if we can save them. Oh-well….  It was and is extremely cold. The wind chill is in the double digits. All the livestock got extra rations and are in as good of protection as they can get. The deer are yarded up, we  probably have 300 in our river bottom. I am sure they will be ready for this weather to break.  It should  be better tomorrow and we will be one day closer to Spring. With the weather moderating we will be chasing pheasants again. Later Randy

The day was beautiful, some wind with sifting snow. Cleared road to the cows in the north bottom. The Smith hill is icy.. will take some gravel down tomorrow before I feed. Rhonda and I set out our trail camera the other day. Picked it up yesterday, we had 95 deer pictures! Mostly does, yearlings and young bucks. I will try to get some pic. on soon. Also checked for our ad. Check it out if you have not done so. Later, Randy
